Lessons Learned from Our 2020 Vegetable Garden
One of the few silver linings of last year’s quarantine is that my husband and I finally got serious about our vegetable garden. Last year’s effort was a little scrappy with many lessons learned and many successes earned!
It was a rocky start – literally. I think the site we chose for the vegetable garden was an old driveway at some point. Hand sifting and tilling took weekend after weekend to prepare the site. (Quick shout out to our Sun Joe Garden Tiller. Easy to use for both my husband and me and very effective on the rocky soil). We were behind the ball on seed purchasing as well with many varieties already sold out. We had never composted before and didn’t have a clue about good soil management. We decided to hand water all the plants – how hard could that be, right? Luckily, we were blessed with rich soil, good sun, and a productive harvest (maybe we should have thinned those cucumbers a bit more).

Carrots going in!
The fence wasn’t pretty but it was effective.
Thankfully, thriving veggie garden.
Pet rock insects thankfully don’t nibble on the plants.
This year when my 2021 Burpee Seed Catalogue came in December, I had the pages dog ear-ed and our order in on January 4. We added a few new vegetables and fruit, altered some varieties that were better suited to Zone 7B (looking at you, onions – of which all bolted last year), and got our orders in before anything could be sold out!
